Regaining the Initiative
The People Agenda Career Counselling Service
Eight Steps to Achieving Your Career Potential There are eight steps in the People Agenda Career Counselling Service, ranging from self-assessment to job researching to polishing interview skills.
The service is available in two formats. As a full service, where we not only take you through each of the eight steps but also provide full support including secretarial, research facilities and extended counselling sessions. For those who are able to undertake the more routine tasks for themselves, and who feel they require assistance in only some of the steps covered by the service, a modular service is available. This allows you the option to choose one of a number of modules to meet your perceived needs, and to make your own arrangements for support services. Like any other reputable career counselling service, we make no guarantees to get you a job. But we will guarantee to equip you with the knowledge, methodology, and right frame of mind to make it easier for you to help yourself to get a job.
We're unusually caring, so we will back you up until you are happily settled (and we'll keep in touch with you even then making sure that it's the right job).
We never turn anyone away – because we've never found anyone who can't benefit from good advice in good time. Whatever their ability or potential.
Market Research & Direct Contact - a Unique Service You tell us who you want to work for and we contact the DECISION MAKER on your behalf. We "sell you in" and the rest is up to you.
Know Yourself Self-assessment is not always easy. It is hard to view your own strengths and weaknesses dispassionately. It is even harder to view them as others see them. We help you review your skills and aptitudes as a prospective employer might view them. The review is concluded with personal feedback, counselling on how to improve weak spots, and a full written report. Armed with this knowledge, you'll know how best to present yourself by letter or in personal interviews.
Know Your Financial Position The immediate financial implications of a sudden redundancy can be extremely distressing – and even impair judgement as to the correct decisions to be made in the immediate future. Experienced independent financial consultants guide you through your personal balance sheet and help you decided what immediate steps need to be taken: these include reduced or delayed mortgage repayments, or sale or retention of assets.
Organising yourself and Your Time Productive use of your time is essential. Too often we see clients devoting large amounts of time to relatively trivial tasks ‘just to keep busy', when they could be using the same time more productively in achieving their goal of starting a new career. With this in mind, we will help you assess the tasks, prioritise them, and give yourself goals and timescales. You'll be just as busy, but more productive.
Reviewing Your Future Sometimes it can be hard to assess your own prospects. Under ambition can be as much of a problem as over ambition. We help you arrive at a realistic assessment of your prospects, the type of employment and employer best suited to you, and the feasibility of securing such a position as an external appointment. We also examine in detail the merits and viability of you starting your own business.
Implementing and reviewing Your Plans Once you have decided on a strategy for securing your new career we can help you form a plan to implement it: the actions you need to take, and the order in which you take them. Most importantly, we will help review and assess your strategy and plans as they progress and modify them whenever necessary.
Researching the Job, Marketing Yourself For key appointments in larger organisations, nothing impresses more than a candidate who has done his or her homework. A keen appreciation of the business, the competition, the product/service range, and the corporate goals and ambitions not only shows your interest in securing the job, but also your thoroughness and approach to any project, qualities which a prospective employer will rate highly. We can show you where to look for such information, and how best to use it. To help you market yourself we will help you with the content, design and presentation of your Curriculum Vitae, as well as the drafting of suitable accompanying letters to successfully achieve an interview.
Running Your Own Business We have helped a large number of individuals set up their own business; we have also advised many more NOT to because their skills, experience and competencies were more appropriate to a “proper” job. Click here to see our own business development programme.
Making A Good Impression First impressions are important. As are the confidence with which you handle the interview, the ability to show clear thinking, the intelligence of the questions you ask, even your attitude to your past employer. We guide you as to how best present yourself, and conduct videotaped interviews to let you see for yourself the impression you make. The sessions are progressive. Initially you present prepared answers to a series of questions, are assessed on these, and your delivery and presentation is polished. Then blind question sessions follow to familiarise you with questioning techniques and pitfalls. The videotape technique gives you a chance to examine your mannerisms and body language, and to improve the overall impression you make to the interviewer.
